Beryl, an aluminosilicate mineral, is the principal ore of the rare
element BERYLLIUM. Long prized as various gemstones,
notably the deep-green EMERALD, the pale blue-green AQUA-
MARINE, the pink morganite, and the golden heliodore, beryl
is easily distinguished by its long, six-sided prismatic crystals
but also forms compact to coarsely granular masses. This
common material is whitish to green and is semi-translucent; gem
material is transparent. HARDNESS is 7.5~8
Crystal size ranges from tiny to enormous. A crystal weighing
200 tons was mined in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Common beryl has
been mined for beryllium since 1925, notably in Brazil, the major producer. Aquamarine is the Birthstone for March. This tumble-polished, Brazilian, gemstone specimen is size 'M' (about 15-20mm) and is supplied on a descriptive card.

Kunzite is the pink variety of spodumene; the other variety is green and is called Hiddenite. Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, i.e. there is a color intensity variation when a crystal is viewed from the top or bottom then from other directions.
