Fluorite cleaved 4cms octahedra Crystal (China)

Fluorite cleaved 4cms octahedra Crystal (China)

Ref: FluoriteOct4

Large (average 40mm) cleaved octahedral crystals of predominently green Fluorite from China. Three crystals shown to illustrate natural product variation.
FLUORITE -also called FLUORSPAR, common halide mineral, calcium fluoride (CaF2). Fluorite occurs most commonly as a glassy, many-hued vein mineral and is often associated with lead and silver ores; it also occurs in cavities, in sedimentary rocks, in pegmatites, and in hot-springs areas. It is widespread throughout the world. Fluorite is used, amongst other things, as a flux in the manufacture of open-hearth steel. In the nineteenth century 'Blue John', a variety from Derbyshire, England, was widely used in ornamental vases and other objects. (See also our smaller crystals ref 23-736)

Native Copper ore ~3cms from Michigan USA

Native Copper ore ~3cms from Michigan USA

Ref: 23-726

Two kinds of copper ore are commonly mined: chalcopyrite and bornite: occasionally the metal is found in it's pure or 'native' state like this specimen. Copper ore is found throughout the world and Zaire is renowned as a source, but the low percentage of metal obtained from the ore and the often hard-to-access location of deposits make many potential mines uneconomic.
Copper is the second most-used metal in the world and is valued for its conductivity (for electrical cable) malleability, resistance to corrosion, and beauty. Copper was mined in Cheshire (Alderley Edge) and in Anglesey (Parys Mountain) before the turn of the century.
As these are natural (cleaned) specimens each will vary from the illustration but be similar in size (approx 3cms).

Hematite Boriodal Kidney Ore ~2.5cms Morocco

Hematite Boriodal Kidney Ore ~2.5cms Morocco

Ref: 23-770

Natural specimens of gem-quality Hematite, from Morocco, with a botriodal (nodular) feature surface that has been enhanced by polishing to show the steel grey-black characteristic of this iron ore. The crystals and coarse-grained varieties have a brilliant metallic lustre and are known as specular iron ore or looking-glass ore. They are used as intaglios in signet rings. Thin scaly types are called micaceous hematite. Much hematite occurs in a soft, fine-grained, earthy form called red ochre or ruddle. Intermediate between these types are compact varieties, often with a reniform surface (kidney ore) or a fibrous structure (pencil ore). Red ochre is used as a pigment in paints and crayons and a purified form (rouge) is used to polish plate glass and jewellery. Average weight of this specimen is 25gms and size about 2.5cms.

Bornite & Chalcopyrite Peacock Ore (Carded)

Bornite & Chalcopyrite Peacock Ore (Carded)

Ref: 23-719

Bornite is a common and widespread copper and iron sulphide mineral and is a minor ore of copper. It forms brittle, granular or compact masses that on fresh fractures are brassy and metallic. Upon exposure to moisture, bornite tarnishes to a purplish irridescence, for which reason it is commonly called 'Peacock Ore'.
Bornite occurs with Chalcopyrite and Chalcocite - both more important as commercial copper ores.
This specimen measures an average of 25mm and is supplied on a descriptive card.

ULEXITE T-V Stone ~2-3cms smoothed faces. (carded)

Ref: 23-900

Ulexite - or ‘T-V Stone’ as it is more commonly known - is a Borate exhibiting image transmission properties due to its tightly packed clear ‘light guide’ crystal fibre composition. Most borates are slightly soluble in water and therefore occur in marine evaporate deposits or in desert basins such as Death Valley in the USA.
ULEXITE is mined from lake deposits in Argentina.
Borax is used as a cleanser, as a flux in the
manufacture of glass and ceramic glazes,
and as a soldering flux. Boric acid is used
as a mild antiseptic and food preservative. The (average 2-3cms) specimen is supplied on a descriptive card.

Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite) crystal average 10-15mm (carded)

Ref: PinkTour

Red to dark pink Tourmaline is sometimes called Rubellite. This specimen, from Brazil, is not of gem-cutting quality; hence the low price.
When pink tourmaline is found in the centre of crystals, surrounded by green colour, they are known as 'watermelon' tourmaline. Tourmaline is a complex silicate whose chemical composition variations account for the wide range of colours.
Tourmaline is said to symbolize friendship, compassion and humanitarianism: It is the birthstone for October and the gemstone for the 8th Wedding Anniversary.

Aragonite 2.5-3.0cms Hex Crystal with twinning

Ref: Aragonite

The first specimens to be described came from the Aragon region of Spain - hence the name. Aragonite is similar in composition to Calcite (calcium carbonate) but has a different crystal structure so it is said to be polymorphic.
These crystal specimens measure about 2.5-3.0cms and show the hexagonal crystal stucture - some with 'twinned' crystals. Ball-like clusters with many radiating twin crystals are sometimes referred to as 'sputniks'.

Magnetite Lodestone with iron filings. ~2cms Utah USA

Magnetite Lodestone with iron filings. ~2cms Utah USA

Ref: 23-818

Lodestone (or loadstone) refers to Magnetite (specimen here is with iron filings), a magnetic mineral form of iron. A piece of intensely magnetic magnetite was used as an early form of magnetic compass.
Iron, steel and ordinary magnetite are attracted to a magnetic field, including the Earth’s magnetic field. Only magnetite with a particular crystalline structure can act as a natural magnet and attract and magnetize iron. The name “magnet” comes from lodestones found in a place called Magnesia in Greece. This specimen is from WahWah, Utah, USA.

BISMUTH Lab-grown Xtl. Carded 1-2cms

Ref: 23-709

Bismuth is the most diamagnetic of all metals (i.e.,opposition to being magnetized) It is hard, brittle, lustrous, and coarsely crystalline. Bismuth is frequently associated with ores of tin, lead, or copper . It expands slightly upon solidifying, rendering bismuth alloys particularly suited to the manufacture of sharply detailed metal castings. With a low melting point, Bismuth alloys are used in special solders as well as in automatic sprinkler heads, fire-door release lines, fuses, safety plugs for compressed-gas cylinders, and many other fire-detection devices. The oxychloride BiOCl has been used to impart a pearlescent quality to lipstick, nail polish, and eye shadow.

TEKTITE (Hunan China) ~2-4cms (Carded)

Ref: 23-890

This tektite was said to be from Hunan, an inland province in southeast China, situated adjacent (north and northwest of) Guangdong. Tektites appear to be glassy bodies formed from sediments melted during large terrestrial impact events. Many but not all exhibit tubular to button-shaped forms, often with tiny surface ridges or bubbles, the overall shape consistent with a glass cooling and solidifying during its brief atmospheric passage during “re-entry”. Because they are largely glass, possible sources of mistaken identity include glassy volcanic rocks (e.g., obsidian), slags and other industrial by-products, and waterworn bottle glass recovered on beaches.

MAGNETITE crystals (4-9mm) in tub (avge 60pcs)

Ref: 23-817

Magnetite is one of the most widespread and abundant minerals and an important ore of iron. An OXIDE MINERAL, it crystalizes in the isometric system forming iron-black octahedral and dodecahedral crystals, as well as granular or laminated masses.
The naturally magnetic variety, lodestone, was well known to the ancient Greeks. Hardness is 5.5-6.5. Often formed at high temperature, magnetite is a common constituent of crystalline rocks, forming abundant grains in ferromagnesian igneous rocks and disseminated crystals in metamorphic rocks. It also occurs in beach sand, in meteorites, and in the natural abrasive EMERY.
The world’s largest deposits are in northern Sweden. The most powerfully magnetic material occurs in the Harz mountains, in Siberia, and on the island Elba.

KYANITE Green Crystal average 2-4cms(carded)

Ref: KyaniteGreen

The aluminium SILICATE mineral, Kyanite (derived from the Greek 'kyanos' meaning 'blue') is used in the manufacture of spark plugs, porcelain and other refractories; it has the same chemical composition as ANDALUSITE and SILLIMANITE. It's long-bladed - (usually blue; like this one from Brazil) crystals (triclinic system) are distinctive. Hardness is 4-5 along the length of the crystal and 6-7 across it, lustre is vitreous to pearly, specific gravity is 3.5-3.7 and cleavage is perfect in one direction.
Kyanite occurs in gneisses, schists and granite pegmatites: it is an indicator of deep-seated, regional metamorphism of clay-rich sediments and it often occurs with Garnet and Staurolite in crystalline schists.
The length of these crystals varies from about 2.0 - 4.0cms.
Crystals are predominently green.
Supplied with a descriptive card.

Kyanite occurs in gneisses, schists and granite pegmatites; often with Garnet and Staurolite and is one of the two minerals that suposedly never needs cleaning or clearing. Therapists claim that it aligns all the Chakras automatically and immediately with no conscious direction and that it brings tranquility and a calming effect to the whole being with particular emphasis on the throat chakra and the third-eye.

ICELAND SPA Calcite (Carded avge 3cms)

ICELAND SPA Calcite (Carded avge 3cms)

Ref: 23-779

The name 'Iceland Spar' relates to the clearest transparent 'crystals' of the common mineral 'Calcite'. The characteristic rhombohedral crystal shape is clearly shown in this 'cleaved' (split with a sharp blade) specimen. Exibiting the light transmission property of 'double-refraction' (bi-fringent), it will be seen that transmitted images (such as the line under this specimen) show a doubling which is particularly obvious if the crystal is rotated over the image.
Calcite usually forms as 'massive' blocks from which these rhombs can be cleaved or as 'nailhead' or 'dogtooth' crystals. This specimen is from Mexico. Average 3cms

Ruby Star polished crystal ~2-3cms India (carded)

Ruby Star polished crystal ~2-3cms India (carded)

Ref: 23-869

Rubies are a form of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The most valued are clear, deep red - termed "pigeon's blood". Some rubies display a star when illuminated because of an effect called asterism. Asterism is caused by inclusions, which are needle-like extensions of other mineral crystals (such as rutile) trapped within the primary stone. This specimen is a natural red CORUNDUM crystal section which has been domed and polished to illustrate the ‘star’ effect which is visible under a point light source. This crystal is from Mysore in India.

METEORITE Sikhote-Alin Fragment 2-3cms (Carded)

METEORITE Sikhote-Alin Fragment 2-3cms (Carded)

Ref: 23-822

This (Iron-Nickel) Meteorite is known as a 'fragment'. The original Sikhote-Alin 'shower' happened in Russia at 10.30 a.m. on the 12th February 1947 and is the largest known such fall and well documented. It is now estimated that over 100 tons of postatmospheric mass hit our planet at about 14.5Km/second. To date, it is believed that about 30 tons have been collected - the largest weighing 1,745Kg and the smallest less than a gram!
These 'fragments' litter the strew field and are the result of relatively large-mass objects shattering on impact with frozen ground.
Each specimen (will vary from that illustrated) measures about 2-3cms and is supplied on a descriptive card with the above information.

METEORITE Campo del Cielo fragment ~1cms (Carded)

Ref: 23-824

Originally discovered in 1576 but thought to have fallen about 4000-6000 years ago. The ancient Indian name means 'Field of the sky or heaven'.
The meteorite is predominently Iron with 6.62% Nickel. It is a course Octahedrite with silicate inclusions.
In the 1770's a mass weighing about 14-18 tons was discovered and thought to be the original 'Meson de Fierro' named by the Spanish in 1576, but it was not excavated. There is speculation that the same mass was in the news in 1992 when an American Meteorite dealer negotiated a private purchase but was arrested by the Argentinian authorities when he tried to transport it. The mass remains in Argentina.

'Rock Crystal' Quartz Single Crystal

'Rock Crystal' Quartz Single Crystal

Ref: XtlQtz

Quartz, which is the most abundant silica mineral and which occurs in most igneous and practically all metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, is nearly pure silicon dioxide. The name quartz is believed to have originated in the early 1500s from the Saxon word querklufterz (cross-vein ore), which was corrupted to quererz and then to quartz. Quartz was well known to the ancients, who called it crystal or ROCK CRYSTAL.
Quartz is colorless and transparent when pure. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale.Coloured varieties are numerous and popular. Amethyst (violet); smoky quartz; cairngorm, or morion (black); citrine (yellow); and rose quartz are common and arise by the incorporation of a tiny fraction of elements that substitute for silicon atoms, such as iron, aluminum, manganese, and titanium.

Topaz Imperial Golden Crystal ~1cms Brazil (carded)

Topaz Imperial Golden Crystal ~1cms Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-894

Topaz, an aluminium silicate material, is a highly valued gemstone and the BIRTHSTONE for NOVEMBER. It forms colourless to staw yellow, bluish or brown, transparent to subtranslucent prismatic crystals (orthorhombic). Fine golden-brown material - like this crystal from Brazil - is sometimes called 'Imperial Topaz'. Topaz occurs in high temperature veins, in pegmatites, and in granites and rhyolites. Hardness is 8 (on the Mohs scale of 1 to 10) and it has one highly perfect cleavage. Common Topaz is widespread and fine gem material comes from Saxony, the Ural Mountains, Brazil, Japan & Mexico.
Precious Topaz should not be confused with yellow (CITRINE) or Smokey Quartz which is sometimes incorrectly described as 'gold topaz'.
