Lepidolite, (also called MICA) is the most common lithium mineral, basic potassium and lithium aluminosilicate; a member of the common mica group. It is a major source of lithium.
Because it is one of the few minerals containing appreciable amounts of rubidium, it is useful in determining geological age. Lepidolite occurs almost exclusively in granite pegmatites and has a characteristic purple flakey appearance, often in spheroidal groups. These crystals are refered to as 'books' containing 'leaves' of crystal which can be easily cleaved from each other using a sharp knife.

Rubies are a form of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The most valued are clear, deep red - termed "pigeon's blood". Some rubies display a star when illuminated because of an effect called asterism. Asterism is caused by inclusions, which are needle-like extensions of other mineral crystals (such as rutile) trapped within the primary stone. This specimen is a natural red CORUNDUM crystal section which has been domed and polished to illustrate the ‘star’ effect which is visible under a point light source. This crystal is from Mysore in India.

Topaz Imperial Golden Crystal ~1cms Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-894

Topaz, an aluminium silicate material, is a highly valued gemstone and the BIRTHSTONE for NOVEMBER. It forms colourless to staw yellow, bluish or brown, transparent to subtranslucent prismatic crystals (orthorhombic). Fine golden-brown material - like this crystal from Brazil - is sometimes called 'Imperial Topaz'. Topaz occurs in high temperature veins, in pegmatites, and in granites and rhyolites. Hardness is 8 (on the Mohs scale of 1 to 10) and it has one highly perfect cleavage. Common Topaz is widespread and fine gem material comes from Saxony, the Ural Mountains, Brazil, Japan & Mexico.
Precious Topaz should not be confused with yellow (CITRINE) or Smokey Quartz which is sometimes incorrectly described as 'gold topaz'.

FLUORITE -also called FLUORSPAR, common halide mineral, calcium fluoride (CaF2). Fluorite occurs most commonly as a glassy, many-hued vein mineral and is often associated with lead and silver ores; it also occurs in cavities, in sedimentary rocks, in pegmatites, and in hot-springs areas. It is widespread throughout the world. Fluorite is used, amongst other things, as a flux in the manufacture of open-hearth steel. In the nineteenth century 'Blue John', a variety from Derbyshire, England, was widely used in ornamental vases and other objects. Colour and size will vary slightly as this is natural material but they will be a shade of green and approximately 2cms overall.

KYANITE Green Crystal average 2-4cms(carded)

Ref: KyaniteGreen

The aluminium SILICATE mineral, Kyanite (derived from the Greek 'kyanos' meaning 'blue') is used in the manufacture of spark plugs, porcelain and other refractories; it has the same chemical composition as ANDALUSITE and SILLIMANITE. It's long-bladed - (usually blue; like this one from Brazil) crystals (triclinic system) are distinctive. Hardness is 4-5 along the length of the crystal and 6-7 across it, lustre is vitreous to pearly, specific gravity is 3.5-3.7 and cleavage is perfect in one direction.
Kyanite occurs in gneisses, schists and granite pegmatites: it is an indicator of deep-seated, regional metamorphism of clay-rich sediments and it often occurs with Garnet and Staurolite in crystalline schists.
The length of these crystals varies from about 2.0 - 4.0cms.

Limonite pseudomorph of Pyrite Brazil (carded)

Limonite pseudomorph of Pyrite Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-810

Limonite is a generic term used for undifferentiated hydrated iron oxides - often hydrated goethite. A very common material in the oxidized zones of iron-bearing deposits, it is produced by the decomposition of many iron minerals, particularly pyrite, with water being retained in varying amounts. While limonite is amorphous, a number of minerals are noted for decomposing to it without losing their crystal shape - particularly pyrite crystals. Any 'crystals' of 'limonite' are actually pseudomorphs of other minerals (such as pyrite, in the case of this specimen from Brazil) which have decomposed in this fashion.

Coloured Diamond Crystal from Katanga

Coloured Diamond Crystal from Katanga

Ref: DiamColXtl

On the Moh's scale (1-10) of hardness, Diamond is 10. It is the hardest, natural, known substance to man. It is pure Carbon (black), which when compressed and fused at high temperature, deep inside the Earth, produces a brilliant white crystal (although it can be found in other colours). Diamond is the Birthstone for April.
Coloured Diamonds such as these cubic crystals from the Congo are generally rarer than white (colourless) diamonds and consequently more valuable. Blue Diamonds contain Boron and yellow diamonds owe their colour to Nitrogen. Most other colours such as brown are due to lattice defects. Several diamonds are illustrated to show variation in colour shape and size.

Each diamond is approx 0.08Ct in weight and 2mm wide. Supplied boxed and with a descriptive card including the above information.

Commonly occuring with other ZEOLITES (alumino-silicates) in basalt cavities and recognised by its distinctive crystal form.
The most common form of these tetragonal crystals are a combination of prism, bipyramid and pinacoid. They exhibit a pearly lustre parallel to the basal cleavage but otherwise appear vitreous. Colour is commonly colourless or white with occasional very pale yellow or pink.

A common location is Poona, India from where it is found on matrix along with pink sheaf-like crystals of Stilbite, in attractive but fragile groups.
Appearance will vary from specimen shown as these are all natural specimens (average size 2x1cms). Supplied on a descriptive card.

Quartz, Herkimer-type, ~2cms from Morocco

Ref: 23-860

Quartz, which is the most abundant silica mineral and which occurs in most igneous and practically all metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, is nearly pure silicon dioxide. The name quartz is believed to have originated in the early 1500s from the Saxon word querklufterz (cross-vein ore), which was corrupted to quererz and then to quartz. Quartz was well known to the ancients, who called it crystal or ROCK CRYSTAL.
Quartz is colorless and transparent when pure. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale. This crystal exhibits clarity with natural smooth faces in a double-terminated configuration and similar crystals from Herkimer County in New York are prized by collectors throughout the world.
Crystal supplied will have an average dimension of 2cms. and will be supplied mounted on a descriptive card.

TEKTITE (Hunan China) ~2-4cms (Carded)

Ref: 23-890

This tektite was said to be from Hunan, an inland province in southeast China, situated adjacent (north and northwest of) Guangdong. Tektites appear to be glassy bodies formed from sediments melted during large terrestrial impact events. Many but not all exhibit tubular to button-shaped forms, often with tiny surface ridges or bubbles, the overall shape consistent with a glass cooling and solidifying during its brief atmospheric passage during “re-entry”. Because they are largely glass, possible sources of mistaken identity include glassy volcanic rocks (e.g., obsidian), slags and other industrial by-products, and waterworn bottle glass recovered on beaches.

Tumbled flat freeform Charoite average 2cms

Tumbled flat freeform Charoite average 2cms

Ref: Charoite

Charoite is an unsual mineral and of rare occurence. It is found to date in only one location: along the Chary River at Aldan in Russia. It formed from alteration of limestones by the close presences of an alkali-rich nephline syenite intrusion. The heat, pressure and more importantly, the infusion of unique chemicals into the rock is responsible for the transformations into new minerals such as charoite. Why charoite has not been found in other locations is not fully understood. But it is probably due to a combination of a chemically unique limestone reacting with a chemically unique intrusion and subjected to unique physical conditions.
Charoite is used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone. It has the appearance of purple marble, but really defies description. Its popularity would probably be much greater if not for its "synthetic" character: It simply looks unnaturally beautiful. Several pieces are illustrated to indicate natural variation and random shape and size - although each piece is about 2cms in width and about 3-6mm thick.

Chiastolite Crystal section

Ref: Chiastolite

Chiastolite is a variety of Andalusite (An Aluminium Silicate). This (average 20-25mm) specimen, from Zimbabwe, exhibits the characteristic 'cruciform' pattern in cross-section due to carbonaceous inclusions.
Andalusite has an orthorhombic prismatic crystal form resulting in an almost square cross-section. It is associated with sillimanite and kyanite and occurs in slates and pelitic schists. Also found in Australia, Brazil and the USA.

TANZANITE Tumbled 10-15mm Crystal pendant (carded)

TANZANITE Tumbled 10-15mm Crystal pendant (carded)

Ref: TanzanTumblPend

Discovered in The Merelani Hills area of Tanzania in the late 1960's, this much prized blue/purple zoisite was named by Tiffany & Co of New York who launched it to the world market in 1969.
Recent improvements to mining techniques and relaxation of 'red tape' has made the stone more accessible to the market in recent years although clean large stones are rare and very expensive.
The stone is predominantly brown/bronze in rough form but can be altered to a beautiful velvety blue by heat treatment. The colour is enhanced by its natural trichoic property showing different colours in different directions along the crystal.
This small (10-15mm average) tumbled gem has been drilled on the top and an up-eye fitted with a 'fleur-de-lys' style spring bail suitable for use with a fine base-metal chain or cord (not included). Three pendants illustrated to show product variation.

Ruby Corundum Crystal ~1cm Brazil (carded)

Ruby Corundum Crystal ~1cm Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-871

Rubies are a form of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The most valued are clear, deep red - termed "pigeon's blood". Some rubies display a star when illuminated because of an effect called asterism. Asterism is caused by inclusions, which are needle-like extensions of other mineral crystals (such as rutile) trapped within the primary stone. Many stones that are not rubies are nevertheless called rubies. The balas, or balas ruby, for example, is a type of spinel; the Bohemian ruby is rose quartz; the Siberian ruby is red or pink tourmaline; others are varieties of garnet.
Synthetic rubies are used as gems, but most of the production is used in the manufacture of watches and instruments. Ruby is the Birthstone for July. This crystal is from Brazil.
