Lepidolite Mica Crystal (carded)

Lepidolite Mica Crystal (carded)

Ref: Lepidolite

Lepidolite, (also called MICA) is the most common lithium mineral, basic potassium and lithium aluminosilicate; a member of the common mica group. It is a major source of lithium.
Because it is one of the few minerals containing appreciable amounts of rubidium, it is useful in determining geological age. Lepidolite occurs almost exclusively in granite pegmatites and has a characteristic purple flakey appearance, often in spheroidal groups. These crystals are refered to as 'books' containing 'leaves' of crystal which can be easily cleaved from each other using a sharp knife.

Ruby Star polished crystal ~2-3cms India (carded)

Ruby Star polished crystal ~2-3cms India (carded)

Ref: 23-869

Rubies are a form of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The most valued are clear, deep red - termed "pigeon's blood". Some rubies display a star when illuminated because of an effect called asterism. Asterism is caused by inclusions, which are needle-like extensions of other mineral crystals (such as rutile) trapped within the primary stone. This specimen is a natural red CORUNDUM crystal section which has been domed and polished to illustrate the ‘star’ effect which is visible under a point light source. This crystal is from Mysore in India.

Staurolite is named after a Greek word meaning 'cross' and is popularly known as 'Fairy Cross', due to the intersecting twin crystal occurance. The crystals - containing Iron, Aluminium and Magnesium Silicate - are prysmatic and often appear as cruciform twins (either oblique - like these French ‘B’ grade crystals - or at right-angles).
The crystals form as porphyroblasts in medium grade schists and gneisses usually associated with Garnet, Kyanite and Mica. Also found in Switzerland, USA & Malagasy.

Red to dark pink Tourmaline is sometimes called Rubellite. This specimen, from Brazil, is not of gem-cutting quality; hence the low price.
When pink tourmaline is found in the centre of crystals, surrounded by green colour, they are known as 'watermelon' tourmaline. Tourmaline is a complex silicate whose chemical composition variations account for the wide range of colours.
Tourmaline is said to symbolize friendship, compassion and humanitarianism: It is the birthstone for October and the gemstone for the 8th Wedding Anniversary.

Topaz Imperial Golden Crystal ~1cms Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-894

Topaz, an aluminium silicate material, is a highly valued gemstone and the BIRTHSTONE for NOVEMBER. It forms colourless to staw yellow, bluish or brown, transparent to subtranslucent prismatic crystals (orthorhombic). Fine golden-brown material - like this crystal from Brazil - is sometimes called 'Imperial Topaz'. Topaz occurs in high temperature veins, in pegmatites, and in granites and rhyolites. Hardness is 8 (on the Mohs scale of 1 to 10) and it has one highly perfect cleavage. Common Topaz is widespread and fine gem material comes from Saxony, the Ural Mountains, Brazil, Japan & Mexico.
Precious Topaz should not be confused with yellow (CITRINE) or Smokey Quartz which is sometimes incorrectly described as 'gold topaz'.

FLUORITE -also called FLUORSPAR, common halide mineral, calcium fluoride (CaF2). Fluorite occurs most commonly as a glassy, many-hued vein mineral and is often associated with lead and silver ores; it also occurs in cavities, in sedimentary rocks, in pegmatites, and in hot-springs areas. It is widespread throughout the world. Fluorite is used, amongst other things, as a flux in the manufacture of open-hearth steel. In the nineteenth century 'Blue John', a variety from Derbyshire, England, was widely used in ornamental vases and other objects. Colour and size will vary slightly as this is natural material but they will be a shade of green and approximately 2cms overall.

Ref: AquaXtlCard

The BIRTHSTONE for March: Derived from sea-water and said to engender a spirit of hope and a promise of better things to come; its light blue arouses feelings of sympathy, trust, harmony and friendship. Aquamarine is one of our most popular and best-known gemstones; almost as popular as the classics: ruby, sapphire and emerald. In fact it is related to the EMERALD, both belonging to the beryl family.
Aquamarine has good hardness (7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale) and a wonderful shine in clear cut examples. That hardness makes it very tough and protects it to a large extent from scratches. Iron is the substance which gives aquamarine its colour, a colour which ranges from an almost indiscernible pale blue to a strong sea-blue.

Limonite pseudomorph of Pyrite Brazil (carded)

Limonite pseudomorph of Pyrite Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-810

Limonite is a generic term used for undifferentiated hydrated iron oxides - often hydrated goethite. A very common material in the oxidized zones of iron-bearing deposits, it is produced by the decomposition of many iron minerals, particularly pyrite, with water being retained in varying amounts. While limonite is amorphous, a number of minerals are noted for decomposing to it without losing their crystal shape - particularly pyrite crystals. Any 'crystals' of 'limonite' are actually pseudomorphs of other minerals (such as pyrite, in the case of this specimen from Brazil) which have decomposed in this fashion.

Coloured Diamond Crystal from Katanga

Coloured Diamond Crystal from Katanga

Ref: DiamColXtl

On the Moh's scale (1-10) of hardness, Diamond is 10. It is the hardest, natural, known substance to man. It is pure Carbon (black), which when compressed and fused at high temperature, deep inside the Earth, produces a brilliant white crystal (although it can be found in other colours). Diamond is the Birthstone for April.
Coloured Diamonds such as these cubic crystals from the Congo are generally rarer than white (colourless) diamonds and consequently more valuable. Blue Diamonds contain Boron and yellow diamonds owe their colour to Nitrogen. Most other colours such as brown are due to lattice defects. Several diamonds are illustrated to show variation in colour shape and size.

Each diamond is approx 0.08Ct in weight and 2mm wide. Supplied boxed and with a descriptive card including the above information.

TEKTITE (Hunan China) ~2-4cms (Carded)

Ref: 23-890

This tektite was said to be from Hunan, an inland province in southeast China, situated adjacent (north and northwest of) Guangdong. Tektites appear to be glassy bodies formed from sediments melted during large terrestrial impact events. Many but not all exhibit tubular to button-shaped forms, often with tiny surface ridges or bubbles, the overall shape consistent with a glass cooling and solidifying during its brief atmospheric passage during “re-entry”. Because they are largely glass, possible sources of mistaken identity include glassy volcanic rocks (e.g., obsidian), slags and other industrial by-products, and waterworn bottle glass recovered on beaches.

MAGNETITE crystals (4-9mm) in tub (avge 60pcs)

Ref: 23-817

Magnetite is one of the most widespread and abundant minerals and an important ore of iron. An OXIDE MINERAL, it crystalizes in the isometric system forming iron-black octahedral and dodecahedral crystals, as well as granular or laminated masses.
The naturally magnetic variety, lodestone, was well known to the ancient Greeks. Hardness is 5.5-6.5. Often formed at high temperature, magnetite is a common constituent of crystalline rocks, forming abundant grains in ferromagnesian igneous rocks and disseminated crystals in metamorphic rocks. It also occurs in beach sand, in meteorites, and in the natural abrasive EMERY.
The world’s largest deposits are in northern Sweden. The most powerfully magnetic material occurs in the Harz mountains, in Siberia, and on the island Elba.

Tanzanite Crystal (carded)

Tanzanite Crystal (carded)

Ref: Tanzanite

Discovered in The Merelani Hills area of Tanzania in the late 1960's, this much prized blue/purple zoisite was named by Tiffany & Co of New York who launched it to the world market in 1969.
Recent improvements to mining techniques and relaxation of 'red tape' has made the stone more accessible to the market in recent years although clean large stones are rare and very expensive.
The stone is predominantly brown/bronze in rough form but can be altered to a beautiful velvety blue by heat treatment. The colour is enhanced by its natural trichoic property showing different colours in different directions along the crystal. Average 15-20mm

Aegirine/Augite Crystal

Aegirine/Augite Crystal

Ref: Aegirine

Aegirine is one of a group of about 20 silicate minerals, which are known collectively as Pyroxenes. This is the only Pyroxene which appears as long needle-like crystals.

First discovered in Norway and named after Aegir, the Scandinavian God of the Sea. Other important pyroxenes are Augite, Diopside, Jadeite and Spodumene.

The darker the colour, the more Iron it contains. Most Aegirine crystals are long acicular (needle-like) type and many are also 'twinned' i.e. they share one or more faces with an adjacent crystal.

Average 30-40mm x 5mm. Supplied with a descriptive card.

Turquoise Sleeping Beauty Arizona ~25mm (carded)

Ref: 23-898

Turquoise is mainly hydrated aluminum phosphate, and prized throughout the world as a gemstone. It has a hardness of 5 to 6 and - in the unpolished state - shines with a feeble, waxy luster. It is often 'stabilized' with resin to give a smooth consistent texture. The color ranges from blue and blue-green to greenish-gray, according to the various amounts of copper usually present. It has been valued for its ornamental properties since ancient times and has been found in jewellery from old Egyptian tombs. The Aztec of Mexico used it for their fine mosaic art. Sky-blue variety of turquoise is the most popular type for jewelry. When exposed to sunlight or heat, this variety sometimes becomes dehydrated and turns green. In the U.S., the mineral is worked in New Mexico, and in parts of California, Nevada, and Arizona (from where this piece originates).

Ruby Corundum Crystal ~1cm Brazil (carded)

Ruby Corundum Crystal ~1cm Brazil (carded)

Ref: 23-871

Rubies are a form of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral after diamond. The most valued are clear, deep red - termed "pigeon's blood". Some rubies display a star when illuminated because of an effect called asterism. Asterism is caused by inclusions, which are needle-like extensions of other mineral crystals (such as rutile) trapped within the primary stone. Many stones that are not rubies are nevertheless called rubies. The balas, or balas ruby, for example, is a type of spinel; the Bohemian ruby is rose quartz; the Siberian ruby is red or pink tourmaline; others are varieties of garnet.
Synthetic rubies are used as gems, but most of the production is used in the manufacture of watches and instruments. Ruby is the Birthstone for July. This crystal is from Brazil.
