Introduction To Cabochon Cutting

Although tumbling is an easy way of polishing a lot of stones fairly cheaply, it is restricted in that only baroque (free form) stones can be produced from rough rock or pebbles.
As a hobby, tumble polishing is limited because it is not time consuming and for this reason people look to the next stage of gemstone cutting , called 'cabochon’ cutting.
A 'Cabochon’ is any stone which has been cut to a particular shape, usually oval, using a saw and grinding unit.
Machines enabling all the operations to be undertaken on one small unit are called 'combination machines’.
These machines may also be used for cutting shapes (called preforms) out of stones which are to be tumbled.
The photograph alongside shows a Victorian mahogany, bench-type, hand operated, lapidary machine (suitable for Cabbing or Faceting), that was discovered in Calke Abbey, Derbyshire, after the National Trust took over it's administration. A similar unit is featured in the book on Agates (28-063) published by the Natural History Museum

Homberg & Brusius Combination Unit type SLB4

A German manufactured machine (Type SLB4-15/20) suitable for domestic or commercial use. The compact design accommodates six or eight inch diameter accessories with 22mm arbor size to match the sturdy shaft diameter.

The machine is supplied mounted, motorised (230v), guarded and fitted with a waterproof ‘ON/OFF’switch ready for use. Speed variation is achieved by stepped pulleys with a simple thumb-screw drive-belt tensioning device accessible from the top of the machine.

The machine body and belt guard are fabricated from heavy guage sheet steel and powder coated in light grey hammer finish. Bolted, with domed head carriage bolts, to a 2cms thick, high density, white faced, chipboard base measuring 60cms wide (about 2 feet) by 57cms deep.

A generous capacity (1.9litre) polythene coolant (water) pot, with a clip-on lid, is held on the machine by means of stainless steel sprung trays allowing universal postioning (on either end of the machine)of the flexible water hose.
